Stress accompanies the bad and the good moments in our lives. Without stress, we probably could not survive. However, when it becomes ubiquitous, it can be a serious threat to our health.
What is stress
It is a normal response of our body. You take a walk in the woods and find yourself face to face with a bear. In your body, as in the bear's body, where the situation is also stressful, a chain reaction occurs, starting in the brain, leading to the production of cortisol from the adrenal glands. This will activate a first area of the brain, the cerebral cortex, in order to react to stressful stimuli, to allow escape, attack or standing still. Your lungs store more oxygen, your heart beat faster, your spleen produces more red blood cells, your blood pressure rises to carry more oxygen, your intestines to digest constantly allow your muscles have more energy and get your hair standing on end as the fur of the bear which gives it a larger and apparently more formidable. The bear turned around and walked away. Phew! Under the effect of cortisol, a second area of your brain, the hippo campus, soothes vote reaction. You come home and, by checking the combination of the lottery, you find that you're holding the winning ticket for the jackpot! Same scenario: Your pupils dilate to improve your vision, your lungs absorb more oxygen, your adrenal glands secrete cortisol again ... Big day! Two situations, one painful and pleasant one for which the stress response and its effect on your body will be the same. Every day millions of people find themselves in similar situations, unforeseen or new, and the feeling of not being in control of these situations or that they represent a threat to them. Delays associated with road traffic, financial problems, new boss or baby on the horizon are, for example, so many situations that trigger a stress response.
The misdeeds of stress
Certainly the stress response may be useful for some occasions. However, activated too frequently, it gradually becomes harmful. First, your body releases its stored sugar and fat. You get frustrated, under constant fatigue. Perhaps you are anxious, have memory loss and perhaps you eat too much coffee, alcohol or tobacco. You become more vulnerable to colds and flu. In fact, if your stress not control, the voting body energy needs exceed its production capacity and stress becomes chronic. It is this step that may arise insomnia, changes in personality or misjudgments. Henceforth, your stress can affect your brain and your immune and cardiovascular systems. Cortisol can damage the cells in your brain, restrict your cognitive abilities and increase depression and irritability. Your vulnerability to infection is increased. Without adequate blood supply, you become vulnerable to intestinal mucous ulcers, and the elasticity of blood vessels may be damaged by tension and heart rate too high. Voting body becomes more susceptible to certain diseases.
